Contact your political representative
We won’t be ignored any longer - we’re demanding better from our politicians to advocate for the university communities they serve. It’s time to hold them to account.
A brilliant way you can support student mental health is to encourage your local politicians to endorse the Student Mental Health Manifesto and adopt its recommendations. Here’s a quick guide on how to do this:
A brilliant way you can support student mental health is to encourage your local politicians to endorse the Student Mental Health Manifesto and adopt its recommendations. Here’s a quick guide on how to do this:
- Find out who represents you
The website TheyWorkForYou will help you find your local MP - all you need is your postcode. Alternatively, you can use WriteToThem, which not only will find your MP for you but provide a form for you to enter your message. - Write your message
It’s time to write your message! If you’re on social media, feel free to make use of our graphics above. You’ll also want to link to the Manifesto webpage. Template emails often can be looked over, and it’s really important MPs hear your voice and your experience, so if you’re up for it, we really recommend preparing your own message. It doesn’t have to be long. Here’s some tips for writing a good email to your MP:
- Get to the point quickly. State in the first paragraph what you want from them (to endorse the Student Mental Health Manifesto and adopt its recommendations).
- Make sure to confirm you are a constituent. Members of Parliament are there to serve their constituent and often receive loads of emails that they can’t help it. Making it explicitly clear you live in their constituency (including your address for a response, if you’re comfortable), makes this clear straight away.
- Stay respectful and polite. For such an important issue, we always welcome passion, but it’s important to be respectful to potential political allies. Many MPs we have worked with across parties have shown a genuine interest in supporting student mental health - let’s build on that.
- Let us - and the world - know! Share that you’ve gotten in touch with your MP and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Let us know you’ve gotten in touch so we can say a big thank you and see how far the Manifesto is reaching. Your efforts all add up and make a real difference.
