Emily's Story
Emily took on the Leeds Half Marathon in support of Student Minds in 2019. She told us: 'The half marathon day was a difficult but highly rewarding experience. Having the Leeds community cheer me on with their posters and ‘sweet stations’ definitely got me through the tough and hilly course. Running past the finish line is a feeling I will never forget: I was overwhelmed with both emotion and pride. I am genuinely so pleased to have raised so much money for such a worthy cause and I am excited to see Student Minds continue to grow and help students tackle and overcome mental health difficulties’ |
FAQs
Who can sign up for the event?
Everyone who meets our minimum age requirement can sign up to participate.
If I don't reach the fundraising target will I still be able to participate?
Yes, the targets are voluntary and you will still be able to take part if you don’t reach your target. However we would be very grateful if you could make a donation to cover the difference if you do not raise at least the cost of your place.
I already have a place at one of the above events. Can I still support Student Minds?
Absolutely! We would really appreciate your support. Please email fundraising@studentminds.org.uk to receive your running top, fundraising resources and support with setting up an online fundraising page.
Can I pass my place onto someone else?
Once your name has been submitted to the Online Participant Portal for the event, unfortunately it will not be possible to pass your place onto someone else. Therefore, please think carefully about signing up if you have any doubts about your ability to take part, or whether you are available on the date.
What happens if I need to drop out?
We understand that sometimes circumstances change and injuries happen. If you are unable to take part for any reason, please let us know by emailing fundraising@studentminds.org.uk as soon as possible.
Can I fundraise for two charities at once?
If you choose to sign up for a Student Minds place in an event, we ask you to aim to raise the listed minimum fundraising target for Student Minds. This is because the places we offer were purchased at a cost to Student Minds. To have the maximum benefit for Student Minds we would like these places to go to people willing to raise a certain amount towards our work. Once you have passed your fundraising target, it is up to you if you wish to raise money for another cause, too!
If you have bought your own place, you are welcome to raise money for as many causes as you wish.

Can I take part in multiple events?
You are welcome to sign up to more than one event. However, before doing this, we would recommend carefully considering how easy it will be for you to raise money for more than one event, and what the physical demands of taking part in multiple events will be! Particularly if this is your first time taking part in long-distance running, we would recommend signing up to just one event.
How do I collect and pay in my donations?
We recommend setting up an online fundraising page with JustGiving - however you are also welcome to raise money through GoFundMe or Facebook. If you set up an online fundraising page connected to Student Minds, the money will automatically be transferred to us.
Alternatively, if you’d like to collect cash donations, you can download a sponsorship form and pay in the money after the event.

Where to watch the Yorkshire Marathon?
If you're not running the marathon (or you have supporters that want to catch a glimpse of you as you speed along) there are many great spots along the route to cheer people on. The Yorkshire Marathon is incredibly supported the whole length of the route.
There are some amazing places along the route where crowds are generally bigger so if it's atmosphere you're after then spectating from York Minster or one of the two manned spectator hubs at Dunnington and Stamford Bridge, both of which are served by the Park and Run buses.
Wherever you decide to watch from, the key is to make sure you arrive nice and early so you don't risk having to fight the crowds. Public transport will also be very busy on the day so you will want to take that into consideration as well.
For family and friends who want to track a runner, download the Yorkshire Marathon tracking app on race day - it's free. You can search by surname or entry number. Updates will appear at 10k intervals and the halfway point
