The Student Journey
This section has been written for school leavers and students with experience of eating disorders. The information here has been written by individuals with experience of eating disorders and health care professionals to help you think proactively about what you can do to support yourself through university or college. Higher Education can be a positive experience; the stimulating environment can enhance self-confidence and a sense of achievement. Moving away from home for education will also give you independence and the opportunity to be self-reliant. Many people reflect back on their time in Higher Education and feel this was a time that shaped their identity.
Though there are many positives, Higher Education is associated with significant stressors. The transition from home and school to the less structured environment of college, independent study, examinations and new financial pressures can all be stressful. You may need to take responsibility for taking extra care to look after yourself, ensure you have the right support network in place and ask for help from university services.
